Downtown Crossing WFNX Block Parties Off To Swinging Start

The 2012 WFNX Downtown Crossing Block Parties,
co-hosted by the Downtown Boston BID, got off to a sizzling start last week with a show by the Swinging Johnsons (above). Free appetizers from downtown's Elephant & Castle restaurant made the show particularly sweet. The Block Parties roll on each Thursday, from 5-8 pm, through August 30. Each week features free appetizers from a rotating cast of downtown restaurants. The Johnsons will be performing at most of the parties.

Historic Preservation Month In Downtown Boston: The Winthrop Building

Each week in May, as part of Boston's Historic Preservation Month, the Downtown Boston is profiling a historically significant downtown building.

This week's featured edifice is The Winthrop Building (278 Washington St.). Built in 1894 by Clarence Blackall, the Winthrop Building was Boston's first steel-framed office building--thus the city's first "skyscraper." It was added to the National Historic Register in 1974.
